Director—Greater Philadelphia Bioinformatics Alliance Initiative

Overview
The BioAdvance: Biotechnology Greenhouse of Southeastern Pennsylvania, in cooperation with seven academic and research institutions, launched the Greater Philadelphia Bioinformatics Alliance (GPBA). The mission of the Alliance is to realize our region’s potential for improving healthcare and advancing life sciences through the application of bioinformatics and computational biology. The director of the Greater Philadelphia Bioinformatics Alliance Initiative is a senior program level position within BioAdvance. The director will be responsible for overseeing the day to day operations of the Initiative and implementing the Alliance business plan. The director will report directly to the managing director and chief operating officer of BioAdvance and will be supported by personnel and infrastructure within the organization. The director will work with the co-chairs of the Alliance, the Alliance executive committee, and the Industry advisory committee to establish programs, policy, and to promote multi-institutional collaborations.

Summary of the Position
The director will be responsible for creating and managing an administrative and operating structure for the Alliance. Currently, the Alliance operates two programs with Drexel University and the University of Pennsylvania offering educational and training opportunities for academia and industry in biomedical informatics related topics and high level exchanges of innovations and advances in the field. The director will oversee these two projects and work with the Alliance members to expand the program offerings. The director will be responsible for working with BioAdvance staff and consultants to secure operating and program support for the Alliance. The director will ensure that a plan is in place to market the Alliance and measure the impact of its activity. The director will be the primary BioAdvance contact point for the initiative.

Requirements

  • At least five years of management experience in the educational/training field, a life science company or similar experience in higher education and research institutions.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse constituencies such as foundations, corporate executives, governmental agencies, educational institutions, and the general public.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in fundraising through writing grants to and partnering with federal, state and local government as well as foundations and industry.
  • Proven project management ability as demonstrated by writing and implementing proposals and helping to resolve complex issues.
  • The ability to demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to be a hands-on, team oriented leader, as well as to be flexible and not stand on ceremony.
  • Possess general knowledge of business practices, operations, and needs.
  • At minimum, a bachelor's degree and preferably a science-related PhD.
