Barbara S. Schilberg, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer

"We have a tremendous opportunity to galvanize economic growth in southeastern Pennsylvania by building on our depth and breadth in the life sciences, particularly in biopharmaceuticals and medical devices. The funding from the Commonwealth allows BioAdvance to provide critical capital and other support to help entrepreneurs move science from the laboratory into successful businesses."

Barbara has over 17 years of experience in the biopharmaceutical industry. As a senior executive of four emerging life sciences companies, she brings broad experience in the key elements needed to build successful companies, including public and private financings, intellectual property protection, corporate partnering arrangements and the management of research programs. Before joining the industry, she specialized in representing biopharmaceutical companies and research institutions in the commercialization of technology.

While a partner in the Philadelphia office of Morgan, Lewis & Bockius, she developed novel strategies for the licensing and commercialization of life sciences technology on behalf of biopharmaceutical companies such as Cephalon, Inc. and non-profit research institutions such as the University of Pennsylvania, The Wistar Institute and Thomas Jefferson University. Her practice supported a wide range of industry activities, including venture capital financings, IPOs and other public offerings, marketing, co-development and joint-venture arrangements, sponsored research, and technology transfer.

She was recruited in 1994 to Cephalon in West Chester, PA where she served as Senior Vice President and General Counsel, and as a member of the executive committee. In addition to those responsibilities, she led a multi-disciplinary team charged with completing Phase III clinical trials and preparing a new drug application for PROVIGIL® (modafinil), which was approved by the FDA in December 1999. She joined Incara Pharmaceuticals in 1998 as Executive Vice President and General Counsel. As part of her responsibilities she managed a research operation in Princeton, NJ engaged in discovering new antibacterial therapeutics, and continued in that capacity after the operation's acquisition by Advanced Medicine in 2000. Barbara was most recently employed as Vice President and General Counsel at Locus Discovery, Inc., an emerging pharmaceutical company in Blue Bell, PA engaged in computational drug design.

Barbara received her J.D. from the University of Virginia and clerked with the Honorable Edward R. Becker, now Senior Judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit.

Gary J. Kurtzman, M.D.,
Managing Director & Chief Operating Officer

"Having been involved with the biotech industry elsewhere, I understand that this region has incomparable biomedical research institutions, talent and resources. I am excited about the central role BioAdvance will play in moving technology from the laboratory and into the next generation of life sciences companies."

Gary has spent over 20 years in the life sciences, including experience in medicine, academic and government-sponsored research and as an executive with several biotechnology companies. Along the way, he has participated in many ¡°start-up¡± activities including creating corporate strategy and infrastructure, private and public fundraising, corporate collaboration, technology assessment and licensing, intellectual property and M&A.

Following research training at the National Institutes of Health and Stanford University in virology and hematology, Gary joined Gilead Sciences, then a pre-IPO California biotech company, in 1991, as head of the virology research and preclinical development group. In 1993, he was recruited to Avigen, an early stage gene therapy company in the San Francisco Bay Area as head of R&D, and in 1998 joined Genovo, a Philadelphia area gene therapy start-up, as Chief Operating Officer. In these roles he worked closely with investigators at several academic centers including the Children¡¯s Hospital of Philadelphia and the University of Pennsylvania to advance research from the laboratory into commercial application. After leaving Genovo in early 2001 following its acquisition by Targeted Genetics Corporation of Seattle, WA, Dr. Kurtzman was Chief Executive Officer of Pluvita, a venture-backed company in Bethesda, MD identifying cutting-edge science to accelerate the drug discovery and development process.

Gary received his undergraduate degree in biological sciences from Stanford University. He received his M.D. degree and medical training at Washington University in St. Louis and Stanford University and is a board certified internist with a hematology subspecialty. He has authored more than 40 research articles, book chapters and reviews and is the inventor on thirteen issued U.S. patents.
